Karva Chauth 2026 in the USA and Canada: moonrise in 41 cities
How the date is decided
Karva Chauth is Karaka Chaturthi, the fourth day of the dark fortnight that the northern calendars call Kartika. The fast is broken with the offering to the Moon, so the day is the one on which the Chaturthi is running at moonrise.
In 2026 the Chaturthi runs from 1:07 am on Thursday 29 October to 10:11 pm on Thursday 29 October, India time. Delhi's moonrise on Thursday 29 October is 8:17 pm, inside it, so Karva Chauth in India is Thursday 29 October.
London, Birmingham and Leicester are the rule's other case. There the Chaturthi runs from 7:37 pm on Wednesday 28 October, after that evening's moonrise, to 4:41 pm on Thursday 29 October, before the next one, so neither moonrise falls in it. For that case the rule takes the second day: Thursday 29 October.
Toronto, Brampton, New York, Edison, Washington, DC, Boston and Atlanta: by the local clock the Chaturthi runs from 3:37 pm on Wednesday 28 October to 12:41 pm on Thursday 29 October. It has begun by that evening's moonrise, so the fast there is Wednesday 28 October.
Chicago, Houston and Dallas: by the local clock the Chaturthi runs from 2:37 pm on Wednesday 28 October to 11:41 am on Thursday 29 October. It has begun by that evening's moonrise, so the fast there is Wednesday 28 October.
Seattle, San Jose and Los Angeles: by the local clock the Chaturthi runs from 12:37 pm on Wednesday 28 October to 9:41 am on Thursday 29 October. It has begun by that evening's moonrise, so the fast there is Wednesday 28 October.
Where the Chaturthi holds moonrise on both evenings, or on neither, the day is decided as for Sankashti Chaturthi: on both, the first evening; on neither, the second.
Calendars that end the month at the new moon (amanta) call this fortnight Ashvina; calendars that end it at the full moon (purnimanta), as most of North India does, call it Kartika: one day, two names.
