Shastra Panchangam brings together local astronomical calculations and the traditional rules used to determine observance dates.

A panchangam combines astronomical information with the rules of a calendar tradition. We explain both the calculated values and the rules used on this site.

The calculations

The site computes the positions of the Sun and Moon by modern astronomical methods, with the Lahiri ayanamsha. Sunrise and sunset are calculated for the selected city. Daily pages show the tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana present at sunrise, together with their ending times.

Method pages describe, in plain words, the rules used to determine observance dates.

Where traditions differ

Smarta and Vaishnava traditions, regional calendars and household practices can give different dates. The method pages show which rule each date follows; keep the day your family keeps.
